Course Overview

This gas test atmospheres course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to employ the correct detection and monitoring techniques of potentially hazardous gases for entering and working in confined spaces.

Training and assessment is conducted at Competency Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.

Prerequisites

All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:

  • Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
  • Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
  • Long work pants

  • Types and selection of gas detectors
  • Sampling regimes and techniques
  • Inspections and maintenance
  • Calibration and bump tests
  • Risk management when sampling
  • Gas types
  • Characteristics and toxicity
  • Lower and upper explosive limits
  • Permits
  • Company gas testing procedures and applicable legislation

MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

This course is suitable for those who are required to enter and work in confined spaces and hazardous environments. Participants will be required to calibrate gas test equipment, and interpret and report on gas test readings. A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.

Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
