Verbrec Divests Competency Training to RelyOn, Strengthening Focus on Core Growth Areas

POSTED: September 11 2025

Verbrec has signed an agreement to sell its training subsidiary, Competency Training Pty Ltd, to RelyOn Australia Pty Ltd for $11.5 million cash consideration.

The transaction marks a significant milestone for both organisations. For Verbrec, it reflects a strategic refocus on its core capabilities across engineering, asset management, and operations & maintenance, while also strengthening its balance sheet and positioning the company to invest in growth opportunities and bolt-on acquisitions that support its purpose of enabling sustainable outcomes for clients and their customers.

Established in 2005, Competency Training has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most trusted registered training organisations, providing accredited courses in High Voltage Operation, Electrical Hazardous Areas, and Electrical Instrumentation. Its team and training facilities will now transition to RelyOn, a global leader in safety and technical training.

Mark Read, CEO of Verbrec, said:
“Competency Training has been a valued part of the Verbrec family for many years, and we are incredibly proud of the strong business and trusted brand that the team has built. With RelyOn’s global footprint and focus on training, this transition will provide new opportunities for Competency Training’s people and clients. At the same time, it allows Verbrec to reinvest in our core business and continue delivering solutions that support our clients’ sustainability and operational goals.”

John Kelso, Managing Director of RelyOn Australia, added:
This acquisition allows us to deepen our capabilities in electrical training and expand our reach across Australia. Together, we’re better equipped to support the energy transition and deliver the skills needed for a safer, more sustainable future.”
