Overview

This Confined Space and Gas Test Atmospheres Package course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to safely and competently enter and work in confined spaces, and monitor a hazardous or toxic environment.

Training and assessment is conducted at Competency Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.

Course Outline

Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Applicable legislations and procedures
  • Definitions and types of confined spaces
  • Hazard identification and risk management procedures
  • Hazardous atmospheres including gas monitoring techniques
  • Isolation, purging, ventilation, permits and authority
  • Roles and responsibilities of team including standby
  • Rescue equipment and procedures
  • Equipment and pre-donning inspections
  • Correct donning of breathing apparatus
  • Operating a breathing apparatus
  • Moving and searching in a reduced visibility environment
  • Communication procedures and the use of control tally board
  • Cleaning, maintenance and storage of breathing apparatus

As this course covers two (2) units of competency, please note that classes may not run consecutively.

Prerequisites

This course is suitable for those who are required to enter and work in confined spaces, and are required to wear a breathing apparatus due to the confined space, or presence of hazardous gases or vapours, oxygen-deficient atmosphere or other situations.

A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.

All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:

  • Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
  • Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
  • Long work pants
